Belated 2019 windup activities

As the new school year starts it's probably a little late to reflect on last year's activities. However in the rush at the end of last year we did complete several activities that were worth mentioning, in the hope others may use these activities at their school or workplace.

During the year we did accumulate quite a points balance and the school was gifted, by Your Moves, a rather big 'gift' in the form of grants in order to improve active travel participation and infrastructure at the school.

At the beginning of 4th term, an incentive was given to the students of several classes to increase cycling, scooting, walking or skating to school. Classrooms had tally boards set up and students filled these in when they arrived at school. At the end of term we celebrated their achievements and students were able to choose a gift from the pool of gifts that included tool kits, helmets, cycle gloves, bike computers, bike lights, hand grips, bike seats, bike cleaning and lubrication packages, drink bottles, books, and smaller items obtained from the Your Moves gift shop. We thank Your Moves as well as Passmore Cycles in Albany for their generous support in providing these gifts through the program.

Due to several students living too far from the school a program was set up whereby once a week these, or any student, could be dropped off and as a group we walked several km to school. This initiative was well supported by parents and from week to week the number of participants grew.

In the lead up to the end of term the year 6's ran a fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctors where students were invited to 'dress up their bike' in the theme of the RFDS. About 25 students participated and judging was conducted by a team of year 6 students and prizes awarded. Due to the abundance of gifts we had received from the grant, all participants were able to receive a gift.

So the year 2019 finished with a bang and we are hopeful to start strong again this year. Extra teachers are on board so the ideas and support for the active message is strong. Wishing all schools and teachers a great 2020 in promoting the students to be active.

And we at John Calvin School also wish to the great team at Your Moves a blessed year and thank you for the great support over the past few years.

Hi Rick - here at YM we say "better late than never" when it comes to sharing your achievements! Your detailed retrospective has earned you 60 points for the inter-class competition, 20 points for the dress up your bike day and 10 points for sharing so much information. Thanks for the reminder about your Park & Walk scheme - it seems to fit in well with the inter-class competition (you received 60 point for the P&W scheme last year, so unfortunately I can't give it to you again). See you soon!
