Assembly information

This story is related to Include Your Move as a Assembly item - Term one

My class addressed the assembly in term one to let the whole school know what the Your Move Travel Smart team do. My year three class did a great job speaking at the assembly. Here is a copy of our assembly speil.

Good morning everyone.

We are going to inform you about what the Your Move Travel Smart programme is about.

The main aim is to encourage children to walk or ride safely to school as much as possible.

At the beginning and end of each year, Ms Clapsis sends a summary of our school data to the Travel Smart people at the Government Department of Transport.

The Travel Smart team meet in B4 with Ms Clapsis during the first break on Mondays at 10.45 am.

One of our jobs is to gather information by going around the school to each class.

We record each child who walked or rode to school on that day.

Then we write their name on a ticket so that they have the opportunity to win a prize and keep the Golden Sneaker until the next assembly.

At each assembly we organise the raffle draw and say our lines.

We remind children to wear a helmet if they are riding.

To have an opportunity to win a prize you need to walk or ride to school.

Ms Clapsis blogs on the Your Move Travel Smart website and is awarded points. She then uses these points to obtain prizes that are used for the raffles or competitions during the year.

These are some of the prizes that you can win if you’re the lucky person who has their ticket drawn or if you are one of the competition winners.

Ms Clapsis did lots of blogging last year and our school was awarded Gold status for the year.

You will be able to see our Gold sticker on the board which is near the front fence gate.

If you are in year three and above, and would like to be part of the team – bring your lunch to B4 on Mondays at 10.45.

If you live too far away perhaps your parent can bring you part of the way and you can cross Phoenix Road safely with Tanya, our cross walk lady.

Remember to stay healthy and keep walking or riding safely to school.

The Team

This story is related to Regular Active Travel Day Promotion - Term 4

All the team is made up of year threes and fours. We meet every Monday during the lunch break. The children eat their lunch while we work out who is saying what at the assembly. We also write out raffle tickets for the children who came to school by other ways rather than by car. The team are getting better at multi-tasking! The team really enjoy going to the different classes to collect the data. They also enjoy making the announcements at the assembly. It has been great to see some of our very quiet and shy children get up in front of the whole school and talk into the microphone.

The Golden Sneaker award continues to be popular so we will use it again in 2019. The previous winner gets to draw out the new winner and this is exciting for some of the children!

Some of the most polpular prizes this year have been the drink bottles, bike bells, torches and erasable pens from Office Works as well as the Coffee Club vouchers. Thanks to Your Move for making it all possible.

During Walk over October the team drew out ten winners at each assembly - more delighted children!

We look forward to being involved in 2019.

Bike Riding Lessons

For more information on how to do this, click here

I was delighted to receive an email from Jillian from Cockburn City Council inviting us to have a bike skills course at our school. The course would be funded by the Local Projects Local Jobs State Government Funding and the City of Cockburn.

An expression of interest was put out to the school community with regards to suitable days etc. Monday was chosen as the most popular option.

I placed the following info in our school newsletter:

“Your child will have the opportunity to take part in three Bike Skills sessions to be held at school on the 12th, 19th and 26th November from 3.15 till 4.15. To take part your child needs to have a bike ( please remove trainer wheels prior to the sessions), a helmet, suitable footwear and a parent/guardian present at the sessions. Places are limited so get your place ASAP.” Maria Clapsis – Travel Smart Co-ordinator

Members of the Travel Smart team made posters to promote the event and these were displayed around the school.

Thanks to Jillian, we were fortunate to have Christina, a qualified bike instructor from People on Bicycles, to coach the participants. During the first session we had one year two girl able to ride her bike without trainer wheels for the first time. The expression on her face was wonderful. The children enjoyed the three sessions learning to ride confidently (without trainer wheels) and the parents could not believe how much was achieved in such a short time.

All the children who took part chose a prize at the assembly.

Thanks to everyone involved. You have made it possible for our children to have gained the knowledge, skills and confidence which will make their future bike riding safe and fun.

Thanks again

National Ride to School Day

Children who rode to school on the National Ride to School Day held on the 23rd March had their names recorded. The Travel Smart team then wrote out a raffle ticket for each person who took part. At an assembly in term two, the names of ten lucky children who rode to school on the National Ride Safely to School Day were drawn out by Ms Coen, our Deputy Principal. The children chose from a selection of special prizes including a bike lock, helmet, toys and erasable pens. There was a lot of excitement both from the winners and the audience !!!

Bike Enclosure

We had several families who would not let their child ride or scoot to school as they felt their child's bike / scooter would not be safe.

A BIG Thank you to the Phoenix Primary school P & C for enclosing the bike shelter at a cost of $5255 to help make it a safer area for the individually locked bikes and scooters.

The gate on the enclosure is locked in the morning and unlocked in the afternoon. We hope to see an increase in the number of children riding to school.

School Website Information

This information has been put on our school website to enable all families to know how the Travel Smart (Your Move) operates.

The Travel Smart team meet with me in B4 every Monday at 10.45. During this time we plan what will happen during the term and work out what will be presented at the assembly.

The team gather information by going around the school to each class. They record each child who walked or rode to school on that day. The child’s name is then written on a ticket (during a Monday meeting session) and is put into our raffle box. At each assembly one ticket is drawn out and the lucky winner keeps the Golden Sneaker in their classroom until the next assembly. The winner also gets to choose a prize. Information is gathered randomly throughout the year. Children are encouraged to keep walking or riding to school to increase their chance of winning a prize.

Congratulations to Jack for being the latest winner of the Golden Sneaker.

At the beginning and end of each year, I send a summary of our school data to the Your Move Travel Smart officers at the Department of Transport.

I blog on the Your Move website and am awarded points. I can then use these points to obtain prizes that are used for the raffles or competitions during the year.

Walk Over October 2017

This story is related to Class Competition for Term Three

I held a "design a poster competition to encourage people to walk to school" for the year three to six students and a colouring in one for the preprimary to year 2 students. All the entries received were given a small prize = delighted children. I displayed the posters in class groups on my classroom windows. Miss Read, one of the teachers, judged the entries for me. There was one winner from each class. Special mention was made about one of the year 5/6 classes for their PERSUASIVE entries. At our assembly last week, members of my Travel Smart team held up the special prizes that the winners could choose from. They were very excited to pick their prizes - all made possible from the support given by the Your Move organisation. The most popular prizes were the drink bottles and the torches that I bought from Office Works. Thanks again for the rewards programme as without your help we would not be able to award prizes galore!

Golden Sneaker

This story is related to Hands up survey

We have a "Golden Sneaker" award presented at each assembly. The team collect data on random days and any child who walked or rode to school has their name entered into our next draw at the assembly. The winner gets to keep the "Golden Sneaker" in their classroom for the next fortnight, pick a prize from the container of goodies as well as being the person to draw the next winner in a fortnights time.

I gave the "Golden Sneaker" a make over this year - check it out in our photo!

Walk to School Day

This story is related to Hands up survey

As we had a professional development day at my school on Friday 19th May I decided to hold our walk or ride safely to school day on Wednesday 24th May. We advertised it through Connect as a message to all parents. My Your Move Travel Smartees team made posters to put up around the school as well as going and telling each class about it. Seventy one children took part on the day and each got a sticker and a raffle ticket. We drew out five names for prizes at the following assembly. The winners were very excited!

Bike Skills Course

I was thrilled to receive an email from Katy telling me that my name was drawn as the winner for completing the resource review survey.  The prize was a Bike Skills course provided by a WestCycle’s Auscycle coach.

I placed the following info in our school newsletter:

“Your child will have the opportunity to take part in three Bike Skills sessions to be held at school on the 2nd, 8th and 9th November. To take part your child needs to have a bike, a helmet, suitable footwear and signed permission forms. Places are limited to the first 15 children so your forms will need to be returned to me in B4 ASAP.”  Maria Clapsis – Travel Smart Co-ordinator

The first half hour of each session was devoted to our pre-primary children and the remaining one and a half hours to children from years 1 – 6.

We were fortunate to have Leigh, a qualified bike instructor from WestCycle, at the school to teach groups of children the basics of bike riding. The children enjoyed three sessions learning to ride confidently and safely through demos and practical activities.

Thanks to the Travel Smart organization for making it possible.  Our children have gained bike knowledge, skills and confidence which will make their future bike riding safe and fun.

Thanks again

Golden Sneaker Award

Our Golden Sneaker award at each assembly remains popular.  The Travel Smart Team make the announcements at each fortnightly assembly.  The winner from the previous assembly gets to draw out the new winner who chooses their prize from my prize box. Their photo is put in our school newsletter.

The Travel Smart team collect data from all the classes. The children who walked or rode to school have their name written on a raffle ticket which goes into the fortnightly draw for a prize.  We keep the same names in the draw for about a term and obviously keep adding to our container as data is collected.  Prizes are from your rewards list as well as from National Geographic where I go and use the gift cards to buy several prizes.

Thanks for the support from Travel Smart.  Maria Clapsis - Travel Smart Co-ordinator
