Main Roads WA recently announced major improvements to school crossing safety as part of the School Zones and Children’s Crossings Program. The program is aimed at making is safer for students, families and traffic wardens during peak school hours.
🚸 What’s changing?
These changes apply during standard school zone hours:
7:30–9:00 am and 2:30–4:00 pm on school days (regional variations may apply).
No changes are being made to children’s crossings already located on roads with speed limits of 40 km/h or lower.

🚸 What’s changing?
- 40 km/h speed limits expanded to all 140 children’s crossings found outside of existing school zones during school zone hours on school days.
- Electronic speed limit signs (ESLS) will gradually replace static signs and be installed on roads where the speed limit exceeds 60 km/h.
- 40 km/h variable speed zones using static signage will be used for school zones on 50 km/h roads.

- Improved safety for students walking, scooting or riding to and from school.
- Greater driver awareness of school zones and children’s crossings through flashing signs and clear speed limits signifying the need to slow down.
- Support for active travel by making school zones and children’s crossings safer, encouraging more students and their families to walk, scoot or ride to and from school.
🏫 What’s been done so far?
- 16 sites have already received ESLS.
- 26 more upgrades are planned for 2025–26.
