Record-breaking year for active travel at Your Move schools!

We’ve crunched the numbers from the 2024 Hands Up surveys, and the results are in—it’s our best year yet for active travel! 🎉

Thanks to the efforts of 87 dedicated schools who completed valid surveys at both the start and end of the year, we’ve captured some incredible insights from over 28,000 students across WA. And the verdict? More students are walking, riding and scooting to school than ever before!

📈 Key highlights from 2024
  • Between Term 1 and Term 4 2024, active schools increased active travel by 9% - our largest impact since 2016!
  • Between 2014 and 2024, the relative change in active travel between T1 and T4 for schools that completed two HUS differed in each year (high 31.7% in 2016 and low -2.6% in 2020 during COVID-19). We saw an average of 5.7% relative percentage increase in active travel across all years combined.
  • Primary schools led the charge with a 12% boost in walking, riding and scooting.
  • Car use at primary schools dropped by 6%—a win for traffic reduction and cleaner air!
  • 59 schools saw a measurable increase in active travel.
  • Schools that ran five or more active travel activities saw an impressive 11% increase, while those with fewer activities saw little to no change.
  • Perth metro schools recorded a 10% increase, while regional schools saw a solid 4% rise.

🙌 A huge thank you!
To every school that ran events, encouraged students to walk, wheel or ride, and submitted surveys—thank you. Your commitment is making a real difference in how students get to school.

💡 Pro tip for Champions
Want to track your progress throughout the year? Run regular Hands Up surveys to compare your event days with your baseline results. Share your findings in your school newsletter or assembly—and don’t forget to post a story on the Your Move website to earn activity points!
