Creating Safer School Crossings

Tips for applying for Children's Crossings and advocating for road safety improvements

Term 2, Week 2: Tuesday 6 May 2025
3.30 pm - 5 pm
Free; Online

Want a new Children’s Crossing at your school?

Join fellow parents, teachers and school leaders for an informative session on securing successful Children’s Crossing applications. Get practical tips and strategies, plus learn how to advocate for better road safety infrastructure in your community. The session will also feature expert insights and actionable advice to help make your streets safer for kids.

Featuring panelists:

Dr Paul Besant, Executive Manager, Children's Crossing Unit, WA Police.
Paul has had two distinct phases of his career, the first being a research scientist and academic in the US and Australia. He specialised in cancer research and teaching in medicine at the University of Western Australia before joining the WA Police in 2011. At WA Police Paul has had roles as an Intelligence Analyst and a significant period in Occupational, Health and Safety before settling into his current roles as Executive Manager of the Children’s Crossings Unit. Managing 600 school crossings across WA with over 700 off-site employees engaged in a high-risk role that has vicarious liability for the safety of school children has many challenges. The Children’s Crossing Unit is a small and very dedicated team that seeks to constantly work with all stakeholders to improve child safety through changes in crossing infrastructure, workplace culture, education, and societal attitudes to road safety.

Lindi Harding, Parent Your Move Champion, St Augustine’s Primary School.
Working with her local community and the City of Belmont - Lindi was successful in securing a Type A Children's Crossing. Lindi is a passionate bike rider and Mum to two primary school aged children. Lindi is also a committee member for the Belmont Community Environmental Champions. Her day job superpowers are business intelligence, data modelling and coding. You can read Lindi's blogs at https://yourmove.org.au/group-profile/St-Augustine-s-School

Lisa Ensor, Engineering Technical Officer – Traffic Infrastructure, City of Canning.
A Civil Engineer with the City of Canning’s Traffic Services Team, Lisa brings a blend of technical expertise, creative thinking and lived experience to everything she does. Lisa is passionate about community and road safety initiatives and believes in making a positive impact through her work.
