Case study - Beckenham Primary School - Securing the journey

In 2024, Beckenham Primary School was awarded a Double Platinum Connecting Schools Grant. The grant funded the installation of a lockable bike and scooter shelter to improve active travel facilities and address community concerns around bike security.

Background

Beckenham Primary School has been a committed participant in the Your Move program, achieving Double Platinum accreditation in 2024. The school identified a significant barrier to active travel: the lack of secure bike and scooter parking. Parents expressed concerns about theft and damage, which discouraged students from riding or scooting to school. Additionally, nearby METRONET works caused road closures, increasing traffic congestion and prompting the school to promote alternative travel options.

Project Description

The grant funded the construction of a lockable shelter centrally located within the school grounds, surrounded by classrooms for added security and visibility. The shelter enclosed the existing bike and scooter parking area and now provides secure, weather-protected parking for bikes and scooters.

Outcomes

• Increased sense of security for families and students,

• Positive parent feedback, with comments highlighting improved comfort and safety,

• Supports ongoing active travel initiatives.

• Strengthened community engagement.

"It feels much more secure. I feel a lot more comfortable letting my child leave their bike at school now." – Beckenham Primary School Parent.
