Case study - Bramfield Park Primary School

Increasing active travel capacity through bike education and access

Bramfield Park Primary School received a Platinum Connecting Schools Grant, which was used to deliver a comprehensive bike education initiative for Year 4 students, alongside infrastructure and resources to support younger students’ road safety learning and active transport engagement.

Background

Bramfield Park Primary has a strong commitment to promoting active travel and has consistently integrated Your Move initiatives into its school culture. With a growing number of students cycling to school and a recognised need to improve bike safety awareness and skills, the school identified a gap in student confidence and access to safe cycling equipment. The grant application aligned with the school’s broader goals of fostering a positive culture of active transport and building capacity for increased participation.

Project description

The Platinum grant funding was used to implement a multi-faceted project that included:

  • Bike education: Delivered to Year 4 students over four weeks, focusing on safe riding practices, helmet use, bike checks and road awareness.
  • Road safety sign: Provided for Early Learning Centre students to use on their bike track and outdoor play areas.
  • Bike purchase: 10 bikes were purchased for Year 1–3 students to use during break times, ensuring access for students who do not own a bike.

Outcomes

The project achieved significant outcomes:

  • Skill development: Students who had never ridden a bike before became confident riders. All participants learned essential safety skills, including helmet fitting, hand signals and brake use.
  • Increased confidence and inclusion: Students expressed pride and excitement in learning to ride. Access to school-owned bikes ensured inclusivity for those without personal bikes.
  • Cultural shift: The initiative contributed to a more positive school culture around bike riding and road safety. Teachers observed increased student interest in participating in future active travel events.
  • Curriculum integration: The bike education was complemented by health curriculum lessons and student-created bike safety posters.
  • Community engagement: The project was promoted through school newsletters and social media, with positive feedback from parents and caregivers.
