Background
Carey Baptist College has long championed active travel as part of its broader sustainability and health initiatives. With growing student participation in walking, riding, and scooting to school, the need for improved infrastructure became evident. The existing bike parking area lacked shelter, and feedback from students and families highlighted the need for safer, more accessible facilities.
Project Description
The grant funded an infrastructure upgrade which delivered:
• a custom-height bike shelter over the existing paved bike parking area to protect bikes and scooters from weather exposure.
• a bike repair station and fixed pump to support students who ride regularly.
Outcomes
• Improved safety and comfort for students using active travel modes.
• Increased capacity for students and families to maintain bikes.
• Strengthened school-wide culture of sustainability and physical activity.
• Integration of active travel into the school’s calendar, including events like ‘Walk to School’ and ‘Bike Ride Day’ each term.
