Background
With increasing student numbers and a surge in active travel participation, Lathlain Primary School’s existing bike storage was no longer sufficient. The school identified junior primary students as a key growth area for active transport and sought to create a more accessible and age-appropriate facility. The new junior primary infrastructure at Lathlain Primary School, would encourage junior primary students to use active travel more frequently and also allow the existing bike infrastructure area to be freed up for a future bike library initiative.
Project Description
The project involved:
• laying two new concrete slabs to accommodate bike and scooter racks
• installing 9 bike racks, a scooter rack and a fixed bike pump station
• creating a separate, dedicated space for junior primary students to park safely and independently.
The infrastructure was strategically placed near junior classrooms to improve accessibility and encourage daily use. The school also plans to contribute additional shelter infrastructure in future stages.
Outcomes
The project involved:
• Improved safety, organisation and accessibility for younger students.
• Increased uptake of active travel.
• Freed up space in the existing bike storage area for a new bike library initiative.
• Strengthened school-wide commitment to sustainability and wellbeing.
“The Your Move Connecting Schools Grant has helped us achieve a fantastic new bike and scooter storage facility for our junior primary students. It's made a real difference in encouraging our younger students to choose active travel. We highly recommend applying for future grant rounds.” – Nicholas Vuckovic, Your Move Champion.
