Case study - Liwara Catholic Primary School - Building bike education capacity

Liwara Catholic Primary School used a Silver Connecting Schools Grant to support professional development for their Physical Education (PE) teacher Mr Ciaran Sanders, who completed the WestCycle Teacher Accreditation Course. The project aimed to build capacity for delivering bike education and promoting active travel.

Background

Interest in riding has grown at Liwara Catholic Primary School, especially during active travel events. To sustain this momentum, staff needed formal training to confidently deliver safe and engaging bike activities.

Project description

The Silver Connecting Schools Grant funded Mr Sanders, PE teacher and Your Move Champion, to undertake the WestCycle Teacher Accreditation Course. The course covered essential topics such as bike safety, skills development and risk management. With this training, Mr Sanders gained the confidence and knowledge to lead engaging and safe bike riding sessions at school.

Outcomes

• Increased capacity: The school now has an accredited teacher capable of delivering bike education.

• Future initiatives: Plans are underway to start a bike club and introduce regular active travel days.

"My hope is that I will now be able to use these skills and resources from the course to deliver some bike education sessions at my school. I think where I see the greatest need at the moment is in the lead up to Year 6 camp. Having attended a couple of years ago, I saw first-hand some of the isolation that can occur when a child is unable to ride and join in those activities during the camp. If I can find time at the beginning of the school year to upskill and improve the confidence of some of those students ahead of camp, it could have a huge impact on their overall experience and enjoyment. The flow on effect is some of the students who attend may not only enjoy activities during the camp but also find themselves a new mode of transport for the end of primary school and into high school.” - Ciaran Sanders, Your Move Champion
