Background
The school has a strong history of active transport initiatives and Your Move participation since 2020. Ride2School events have consistently boosted active travel rates, with previous events showing significant increases in student participation. The 2025 event was designed to build on this success and further engage the school community.
Project description
The Silver Connecting School Grant funded the hire of 15 ‘crazy bikes’, including penny farthings, stepper bikes and minibikes. Students gathered on the quadrangle to test their balance and coordination, supported by craft stations, bike-themed tattoos and a library display on cycling. Parent and student volunteers helped run the event, which was complemented by weekly PA announcements and a Friday Riding Challenge.
Outcomes
• High participation: 84% of students used active transport on the day, up from 38% in the Term 1 survey.
• Sustained engagement: 22% of students joined the Friday Riding Challenge for the rest of Term 1.
• Community connectedness: Families, including parents and grandparents, attended and supported the event.
• Behaviour change: The initiative encouraged regular active commuting.
"The Connecting Schools Grant enabled Marmion Primary School to host a Ride2School event, which provided the novel experience of riding penny farthings and stepper bikes for students. It was a terrific start to the school day and invaluable in promoting a positive culture of active transport" - Melanie Davies, Your Move Champion
