Background
When the school first began with Your Move, it discovered that a lot of the student didn’t know how to ride a bike. The school identified cultural backgrounds and families moving to Australia as key factors, leading to many students not having bike riding skills, and in some cases, not owing a bike.
Project description
Through the Your Move program, Queens Park Primary School’s Your Move Champion became an accredited bike education teacher in 2024, with plans to self-deliver bike education lessons at school. Not every student had access to a bike, so the school applied for a Connecting Schools Grant to fund bike hire for these students.
The Silver Connecting Schools Grant was used to support:
• self-delivered bike education sessions on school grounds for Year 3 students
• bike hire (15 bicycles) for four riding lessons
• provision of safe and reliable helmets for all participating students.
Outcomes
• Increased participation: A noticeable spike in students riding to school on bike education days.
• Skill development: 18% of students who initially could not ride a bike were able to ride unassisted and brake correctly by the end of the program.
• Positive feedback: Both students and parents responded enthusiastically, highlighting the program’s value in building confidence and practical skills.
“The Connecting Schools Grant enabled us to provide all of our students with a safe bike and helmet that they could develop their bike riding skills and confidence on.” - Sam Goodhill, Your Move Champion
