Background
The school had previously focused on active travel events, which successfully engaged the community but revealed a gap in students’ bike safety knowledge and riding ability. Many students lacked access to bikes or had never learned to ride, limiting their ability to participate in active travel.
Project description
The bike education sessions were delivered weekly over four weeks, with one-hour sessions per class. Students learned road rules, helmet safety and bike control techniques. Hire bikes were provided to ensure all students could participate, regardless of access or distance from school.
Outcomes
• Improved confidence: Students progressed from never having ridden a bike to confidently riding around the school grounds
• Safety awareness: Students learned proper helmet use and increased awareness of road safety
• Community involvement: Parents were encouraged to ride with their children, and students reported the sessions as a highlight of their week.
“The Connecting Schools Grant enabled us to expose the year 4s and 5s to bike education, riding skills and safety, in preparation of the students becoming more independent, at their age.” — Amy Fulton, Your Move Champion
