Background
Victoria Park Primary has actively participated in the Your Move program since 2017, fostering a strong culture of walking, riding and scooting to school. With increasing numbers of students choosing active travel, the school faced a shortage of suitable bike parking. Bikes were often left in inappropriate areas, creating safety hazards and limiting accessibility. The grant application aimed to address this issue.
Project description
The grant funded:
• A new parking area and involved:
• A garden bed was cleared and a 3 x 4 m concrete slab laid.
• Two compact bike racks were installed, providing secure storage for 12 bikes near the school entrance.
• Road safety education:
• Students participated in an excursion to the Constable Care Safety School, where they learned essential road safety skills in a hands-on environment
The parking upgrade was supported by ongoing school programs such as ‘Walk, Ride, Scoot to School Wednesday’ and the Walking School Bus.
Outcomes
The project delivered strong and lasting benefits:
• Increased active travel: The new racks are full most days, reflecting a rise in students riding to school.
• Improved safety: Bikes are no longer left in unsuitable areas, reducing hazards and improving pedestrian flow.
• Positive community feedback: Parents praised the quality and location of the new infrastructure.
“The Your Move Connecting Schools Grant has enabled us to establish a high-quality bike storage area, which has encouraged more students to ride to school. We are grateful to the Your Move team for supporting our efforts to promote active travel and foster a healthier, more sustainable school community.” — Leanne Lee, Your Move Champion.
