DIY bike education lesson plans

How to ride a bike

Would you like to deliver bicycle education in your school yourself? Or know someone who might? 

We have three WA Curriculum linked ‘Riding a Bike’ modules ideal for Years 4-6:

  • Riding a bike – the absolute basics
  • Riding a bike – intermediate riding skills and knowledge
  • Riding a bike – advanced bike skills and knowledge

How does Your Move support bike education in schools?

If your school is registered and participating in the Your Move Schools program, there are a range of opportunities to deliver bike education to your students every year. Additionally, schools can use their Your Move Rewards Points to fund bike education courses at your school you can go to our online ‘Rewards shop’ and search for ‘bike education’. If you do not have the required points, you can make up the difference in school budget.

You can also earn a Connecting Schools Grant to receive FREE bike education at your school!

Each year, WA schools participating in Your Move have the opportunity to redeem free bike education packages through the Connecting Schools grant program. Visit the Connecting Schools information page to find out more. 

DIY Bike Ed - Riding a bike - The absolute basics

Summary

In this module students learn safe bike handling practices and how to stay safe while riding their bike. They will understand the basics of checking their equipment prior to cycling to ensure it is safe for use and practise basic riding skills.

Opportunities are provided to enable students to develop and practise skills, knowledge, safe habits, responsible behaviours and decision-making skills in a range of situations that are relevant to their ages and abilities. See also Links to Western Australian Curriculum on page 11.

DIY Bike Ed - Riding a bike - Intermediate skills and knowledge

Summary:

In this module students build on their basic bicycle knowledge and expand and refine their riding skills. Opportunities are provided for students to practise and rehearse skills and routines whilst riding in static and dynamic simulated road and hazard conditions. 

Students learn to consider others around them when riding whilst using applicable non-verbal and verbal communication skills to create and maintain a safe environment. See also Links to Western Australian Curriculum on page 10.

DIY Bike Ed - Riding a bike - Advanced skills and knowledge

Summary:

In this module students incorporate additional communication skills to their repertoire of safe bicycle riding practices to ride safely on shared or separated paths, alone or in a group. 

Opportunities are provided for students to refine the concepts of gear selection, execution of riding skills and further development of their situational awareness skills. See also Links to Western Australian Curriculum on page 12.
