Bike Bus @ Mosman Park PS

The Bicycle Education Program, funded by a Federal Sports Grant, emphasises the importance of students riding to school safely and correctly. 

Mosman Park Primary School has made significant efforts, alongside the school community, to reduce traffic congestion around the school. As a recognised Your Move school, Mosman Park PS has implemented a "Bike Bus" every Friday. Through this initiative, students meet at designated locations to ride to school with parent volunteers, greatly decreasing the number of vehicles near the school.

This bike education program for primary schools offers a comprehensive approach to teaching cycling skills and safety. The curriculum aims to cultivate safe cycling habits through interactive lessons on essential skills such as road awareness, balance, and control. The program also builds confidence in young riders, enabling them to navigate both school and neighbourhood roads safely. 

Throughout the day, the Your Move student team, under the guidance of Associate Principal Ms. Cole, managed the movement, storage, and safety of students' bicycles.

During today’s assembly, we talked to MPPS students about how they can ride their bikes to school safely, especially now that spring has arrived. The weather is now perfect for riding. The assembly highlighted how riding a bike or scooter can help reduce the amount of car traffic around the school, which means less accidents and is better for the environment, making it safer for everyone. 

We reminded students in years 3-6 to be extra careful when riding to school, not just while crossing roads, on the footpaths too, because they are shared with locals which means anyone can use them. Students should watch out for pedestrians and be mindful of cars coming out of driveways and turning corners. They should also look left and right before crossing roads, especially the busy ones like Wellington Street. Students need to always wear a helmet on their bike or scooter to prevent head injuries. These are key points to help ensure everyone's safety.

Next term, our school will re-start the Bike Bus Program. This will allow students to ride to school in larger groups with an adult, which makes biking safer and more fun. Students who join the Bike Bus on Fridays will earn faction Points for their house and have the chance to win some awesome prizes.

When arriving at school, everyone was reminded to enter the school through the main gate, where the Your Move committee will enter them in for a faction point and the chance to win a prize. We also reminded students to walk their bikes once inside the school grounds because teachers are going in and out of the staff room with hot drinks or paperwork and someone could get hurt.

It's important to park bikes neatly in the designated year-level bike areas to keep the school organised and safe. We presented images to show students what the bike racks should look like. 

The assembly concluded with a reminder to sign up for Bike Bus Fridays and to enjoy riding to school safely.

To speed up the way bicycle riders are recorded when they ride to school each Bike Bus Friday, we developed an online form whereby the Your Move Team, armed with their iPads use the form to record the riders' details.

The online form collates their name and House they belong to. This data is collated and House points are allocated to each House. The names of the students are also recorded and using a random selection process, winners are selected for bicycle vouchers and equipment.

It is an easy and efficient way to record students who ride to school. We will be using a similar form for Walk 2 School and Ride 2 School days in the future.
